MODELLING THE SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF WATER SUPPLY NETWORK IN AWKA AND ENVIRONS, NIGERIA

OKECHUKWU INNOCENT ODUMODU REG.NO.2006227001P

Abstract

The main aim of this work is to formulate a model to determine optimal cost forwater supply given surface and/ or underground water sources. The optimal costshall be used to address the sustainable management of the Awka water schemes by the Anambra State Water Corporation Awka. The model took into account annual operation and maintenance costs to enable the water agency to stay in business as it faces the challenges of competing water vendors. The costs for the annual operation and maintenance (O and M) for a typical water treatment scheme for varying average inflows of raw water were formulated. Three varying ratios of treatment costs were apportioned for the modelling analyses for the unit treatment processes of sedimentation, coagulation and flocculation, filtration, metals removal and disinfection, respectively. These were used to derive annual O and M linear and power cost models for the treatment processes for the water schemes. The critical model case given by L2 1397 10733 03 C Q E  wa s adopted. This model would ensure sustainable management of the water schemes. The adopted model after sensitivity analysis of 30% increases in the annual O and M costs, when compared with accruable annual revenue of N30.66m, N5.11m and N287.4m for present day demands of 4,700; 470 and 22,500 m3/day respectively for Amawbia Bore Hole Water Scheme, Udoka Bore Hole Water Scheme and the Awka Surface Water Scheme gave viable water schemes.
