EFFECT OF PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF COARSE AGGREGATE WITH CRUSHED COCONUT SHELL ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE
Abstract
Thestudywascarriedouttoevaluatetheeffectofpartialreplacementofcoarseaggregatewithcrushedcoconutshellonmechanicalpropertiesofconcrete.Granitewaspartiallyreplacedwithcrushedcoconutshellinanincreasingorderof5%,10%,15%,20%and25%byweightofgranite.Theconcreteandconcretewassubjectedtovarioustesting.The tests include:sieve analysis test,specific gravitytest,slump test,compressivestrengthtest.Resultsobtainedfromsieveanalysistestrevealedthatsand,graniteandcrushedcoconutshellwasclassifiedasA-2-6,A-1-aandA-1-baccordingtoAASHTO SoilClassification System,SM,GC and GM according to Unified SoilClassificationSystem,thespecificgravitywas2.55and2.61,slumptestresultsofthefreshconcreterevealedthattheslumpoftheconcretedecreasedfrom 0%additionofcrushedcoconutshellto25%additionofcrushedcoconutshelltotheconcrete,thehardeneddensityandcompressivestrengthoftheconcretedecreased0%additionofcrushedcoconutshellto25%additionofcrushedcoconutshelltotheconcrete.Thestudythereforediscouragestheuseofcoconutshellasaconstituentinconcretesincethecompressivestrengthoftheconcretewasundermined.
