Abstract

This research work involves determining the effects of quarry dust and rice husk on the engineeringproperties of coarse grained soil. The test was carried out in the civil engineering laboratoryNnamdi Azikiwe University. The soil sample was collected at ifite, Awka Anambra state. The testwas carried out on the natural sample and the sample with rice husk ash and quarry dust whichinclude: moisture content, specific gravity, grain size distribution, Atterberng limits, compactionand California bearing ratio(CBR) tests both before and after the adding the quarry dust and ricehusk ash at varying percentages and proportions. The results of the natural soil sample andimproved soil sample quarry dust and rice husk ash indicate that it can be used to alter and makeup for the deficiency in the particle sizes. The results of the optimum moisture content (OMC) inCGS-QD (coarse grained soil and quarry dust) mixtures brought a decrease in optimum moisturecontent and an increase in the MDUW (maximum dry unit weight) while that of the CGS-RHAmixtures brought a decreases in both the OMC and MDUW. The result obtained from the CGSQD for the liquid limit brought a slight decrease in the liquid limit state and increased the plasticityfrom LOW to MEDIUM while that of the CGS-RHA mixtures reduces the plasticity index of thesoil to that of NON-PLASTIC. The CBR value obtained from the natural soil sample was 2.5%which suggests that the soil is very weak and hence the need to undergo soil stabilization, at theapplication of quarry dust at 30% the CBR value of the soil was increased to 5.2% and at theaddition of rice husk ash the CBR value was also increased to 4.5%, this suggests that quarry dustand rice husk ash are good stabilizing agents as they enhanced the strength and rigidity of the soilsample.
