Abstract
This study aimed to analyze and design an alternative low cost pedestrian bridgeusing Nigeria timber specie Milicia excelsa generally known as Iroko or OJI tree. The permissible stress method of analysis was used for analyzing the bridgecomponents (beam & slabs). For overall stability, the abutments wasdesigned using reinforced concrete. Iroko was used for the analysis. Resultsobtained indicate that Iroko is suitable for the design of pedestrian bridgesowing to its strength and durability properties. The use of timber in low costpedestrian bridges can be a cost – effective and sustainable alternative toother construction methods especially in economically disadvantaged ruralareas
