SUBGRADE STABILIZATION USING LOCALLY AVAILABLE MATERIALS (RIVERSAND AND PALM BUNCH ASH)
Abstract
This research work is aimed at investigating the performance benefits and potential risks of using subgrades stabilized with locally made materials. The Properties considered herein is California Bearing Ratio CBR. The palm ash was gotten by burning palm leaves in an incinerator. Preliminary test on the subgrade material and river sand classified them according to AASHTO as A-7 and A-3 material respectively. 6 different percentage replacement mixes were prepared from 0% to 25% for river sand and 0% to 10% for palm ash. From the compaction and CBR test carried out of the mixes, it was observed that the value OMC reduced at 5% river sand and 2% palm ash replacement then increases at 10% river sand and 4% palm ash replacement, maintains its value at 15% river sand and 6% palm ash replacement, afterward the value of OMC kept increasing. The value of the MDD kept increasing from 5% river sand and 2% palm ash replacement, got to its peak value of 1.97g/cm3 at 15% river sand and 6% palm ash replacement, and then reduces afterwards. The value of the CBR kept increasing from 5% river sand and 2% palm ash replacement, got to its peak value of 18% (soaked) and 70% (unsoaked) at 16% river sand and 6.8% palm ash replacement, and then reduces afterwards. A recommended Optimum replacement percentage of 15% to 16% for river sand and 6% to 6.8% for palm ash can suitably be used for subgrade stabilization.
