PRODUCING CONCRETE OF HIGHER STRENGTH USING FLY ASH AND A GENERIC SULFONATED NAPHTHALENE FORMALDEHYDE CONDENSATE SUPERPLASTICIZER
Abstract
This study investigated the effects of fly ash and Sulfonated Naphthalene Formaldehyde condensate (SNF) on the strength of concrete. A nominal mix of 1:2:4 was used, with the water/cement ratio varied between 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6. Fly ash was kept constant at 8%, while SNF was varied between 0% and 3%. The results showed that the addition of fly ash and SNF increased the compressive strength of concrete. The highest compressive strength was achieved at a water/cement ratio of 0.4, 8% fly ash, and 3% SNF at 28 days curing. 40 N/mm2 is a threshold value for high-strength concrete which is normally tested at 90 days. In conclusion, the study showed that adding fine fly ash and SNF in a normal concrete is an effective way of greatly increasing the expected strength. It was then recommended that they should be used for the purpose and also for high-strength concrete.
