EFFECTS OF FRESHWATER AND BOREHOLE WATER ON THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH AND SLUMP OF FRESH CONCRETE
Abstract
In this research work, the effect of borehole water in the production of concrete was investigated. A total of sixty (60) concrete cubes were cast for compression strength test i.e., thirty cubes were cast using fresh water and the other thirty cubes were also cast using borehole water. The concrete cubes were cured at 7, 14 and 28 days respectively. The result of the average compressive strength of concrete obtained using fresh water at a concrete mix ratio of1:2: 4, and water cement ratioof 0.45 ranges from 15.73 to 19.29N/mm2 while that of borehole water ranges from15.56-17.42N/mm2 for the curing period of 7, 14, and 28 days. The slump value of the freshly made concrete using fresh water was 40mm while that of salt water was 42mm.The results obtained shows that the presence of salt in some boreholes affects the effectiveness of concrete in terms of strength when used in concrete production.
